# Re-install the Watchdog Mainnet Canister

This proposal re-installs the mainnet watchdog canister, marking its first reinstallation under the Network Nervous System (NNS) as the controller. 
The primary objective of this process is to begin anew with a verifiable hash for the watchdog canister, ensuring a clean slate. 
For the context see the announcement on the forum [post](https://forum.dfinity.org/t/direct-integration-with-bitcoin/6147/687).

The watchdog canister is a tool that checks on the Bitcoin canister. It looks at the latest block the Bitcoin canister has and compares it with the newest blocks from different 
Bitcoin explorers.

If the latest block in the Bitcoin canister is different from the ones in the Bitcoin explorers, the watchdog canister will notice this. This could mean that the Bitcoin canister 
isn't working right. If this happens, the watchdog canister can disable access to the public APIs provided by the Bitcoin canister.

The main job of the watchdog canister is to make sure the Bitcoin canister is working well.

## How to Verify the Wasm Hash of This Canister?

To verify the Wasm hash of this canister, please follow the instructions below.

**NOTE:** 
This verification process may not yet work for M1 Macs.

1. Clone the [bitcoin-canister repo](https://github.com/dfinity/bitcoin-canister)
1. Execute the following commands to build the canister and output its Wasm hash:

# Checkout the specific commit.
$ git checkout b1693619e3d4dbc00d8c79e9b6886e1db48b21f7

# Build all the docker canisters.
$ docker build -t canisters .

# Extract canister's Wasm.
$ docker run --rm --entrypoint cat canisters /watchdog-canister.wasm.gz > watchdog-canister.wasm.gz

# Calculate SHA-256 of the canister's Wasm.
$ sha256sum watchdog-canister.wasm.gz
```

You should then see the following output:
