Internet Identity 1.0 Backward Compatibility must not be maintained




## BACKGROUND:
Internet Identity 2.0 upgraded the original Internet Identity 1.0 by removing the need to manage identity numbers, introducing passkeys for seamless, device-based logins, and adding familiar options like Sign-in with Google, creating a more user-friendly, secure, and intuitive experience for decentralized applications on the Internet Computer. The core difference is the shift from a numeric ID system II 1.0 to a modern accessible authentication standard II 2.0.


## ADOPT:
A vote to Adopt confirms that the new Internet Identity 2.0 authentication standards are satisfactory, backward compatibility with II 1.0 numeric system must not be maintained, and no further actions are required.


## REJECT: 
A vote to Reject asserts that the legacy Internet Identity 1.0 numeric system must be maintained, and this backward compatibility must be implemented immediately.


## MOTIVATION:
While there are those that would argue the legacy system should be maintained:

I want to sign in using my ICP number and seed phrase without having to worry about my email getting hacked or lose in my passkey device and not be able to get my funds out of my account. It should be fully optional or not forced upon the users since we are so internet freedom here.

Here is a list of reasons this proposal should be adopted:

No More Identity Numbers: Replaced by Discoverable Passkeys, making logins simpler and device-centric.

Passkey Support: Uses modern standards, storing private keys securely on your phone or laptop for touch/face ID logins.

Web2 Integration: Adds Sign-in with Google and Apple, Microsoft in some cases, lowering barriers for mainstream users.

User-First Design: Features a completely redesigned, intuitive interface for a smoother login flow.

Multiple Accounts: Allows creating different accounts for one app from a single identity.


## CONCLUSION:
In essence, II 2.0 makes Web3 login as easy as Web2, leveraging familiar practices like Google login and advanced security passkeys while removing the friction of managing unique numbers, bringing a more accessible and integrated user experience. There is no compelling reason to maintain the legacy backward compatibility. We recommend voting to adopt.
